True Colors and Unicorn Hair

I walked into my favorite salon (The Lather Lounge!) and asked my hairstylist (David!) if he could put Unicorn Highlights in my hair. This was days before I was set to arrive in Orlando on the set of the fabulous Fix My Brand with Ali Craig Reality Show. David set to work and as he cut and colored my hair we began talking about why I had made a decision to go with a new multi-colored do. I told him I was surprised I hadn’t actually been born with that color hair because we are all born with vibrant and amazing color that is just waiting for opportunities to be presented to this great big world. I told him that I wanted the way I felt on the inside to reflect the way my hair looked on the outside. I liked knowing that I would still have dark hair because it would represent my struggles and darkness. I also loved that the new colorful highlights represented the way I was bringing my color out into the world in ways that honored my journey through that darkness.

David stopped for a second and looked at me and said, “You’re like Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors”. I smiled because that suddenly made so much sense.  He started talking about how amazing Cyndi Lauper is and how she really owns her own color and her unique personality. I agreed. He mentioned how she pulled off singing the song “She Bop” and I laughed. But in all honesty, she “pulled it off” because she totally believed she was a totally effing rockstar. We’re all total effing rockstars. We just need to be reminded to reconnect with that part of who we are. Our “true colors” really do have the potential to shine through in real ways that have the potential to make a difference in our lives and in the world.

If MoonRoot Spirit with Gina Bell  had a theme song  True Colors would probably be it. If you pull up beside my car at a traffic light there’s a good chance Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors is playing or I’m jamming out to She Bop…. she bop…. she bop….

True Colors Lyrics

You with the sad eyes

Don't be discouraged

Oh I realize

It’s hard to take courage

In a world full of people

You can lose sight of it all

And the darkness inside you

Can make you feel so small

But I see your true colors

Shining through

I see your true colors

And that's why I love you

So don't be afraid to let them show

Your true colors

True colors are beautiful

Like a rainbow

Show me a smile then

Don't be unhappy, can't remember

When I last saw you laughing

If this world makes you crazy

And you've taken all you can bear

You call me up

Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors

Shining through

I see your true colors

And that's why I love you

So don't be afraid to let them show

Your true colors

True colors are beautiful

Like a rainbow
